Message Go buy a porter cable random orbit buffer. Then you dont have to worry about most of these associated problems many of the people here are mentioning.

Personally, if you can, I would use something finer than 2000, although 2000 will work fine. Also, be sure not to use your fingers...get a sanding block or something similar. Be sure to lubricate as much as possible during the process.

Afterwards the area you sanded should be heavily scratched. In order to remove these scratches you will want to use an ABRASIVE polish (some products listed as polishes merely fill in scratches - temp fix). The best results can be obtained by applying the polish with a porter cable random orbit buffer - which will NOT burn your paint. Although each brand is different, I stick with Zaino's PC Fusion. It is much safer than most polishes because the abrasive particles are diminishing - they break down and become less effective with use, thus reducing the risk of going through the clear coat. Start using an aggressive foam pad to apply the polish, and then follow up with a less aggressive pad, and then finally a polish grade pad. Once again, different pads can be obtained, but I recommend Lake country mfg. or the ones I use, Adam's durafoam.

After the scratches are all essentially gone, either wax the surface or wax w/ a scratch removing/filling wax and follow up with a clearer wax. (Once again, Zaino recommended).

One thing I noticed - if you are wet sanding b/c of the color difference i noticed between your panels, you might try using a claybar...I have a feeling you will get the same results you are looking for and this is a much easier, safer, and timelier process.
